7 tips to take care of your hands

Beauty 31/05/2021

The hands are very exposed to external aggressions, all year round. They are affected by cold winter temperatures, UV rays in the summer, frequent contact with household products (washing-up liquid, detergents, etc.) and frequent daily washing (with soap and water, or with hand sanitizer). It’s not surprising, then, that without proper care, they tend to become dry and uncomfortable. The consequences of this dehydration are real: the skin becomes tight, sometimes suffering from redness and irritation, and loses its glow and natural elasticity. In the most extreme cases, dry skin can lead to chapped and cracked skin: damaged and painful hands!

To avoid such a situation, we explain in 7 tips how to take care of your hands daily and keep your skin well nourished and healthy. Your hands are beautiful in any situation!

Protect your hands both in winter and summer

The first step to keeping your hands beautiful is to protect them! Wind, cold and sun weaken the skin and dry out hands, since they are exposed all year round. To protect them from the weather, remember to put on gloves whenever you go outside in winter, and to protect them with sunscreen – as well as your face and the rest of your body – when sunbathing in summer. This will preserve the hydrolipidic film, the skin’s natural barrier, whose role is to retain moisture. A good sunscreen product will also protect you from pigmented spots, the famous brown spots that grow on the skin as we get older and that we would gladly do without!

Wear gloves when doing household chores

Similarly, use the “glove” reflex when doing household chores. Water and cleaning products, which often contain irritating substances, are the greatest enemy of beautiful hands, drying them out mercilessly. Avoid touching those products with your bare hands to preserve their beauty.

Wash your hands with gentle products…

In these epidemic times, people tend to wash their hands more often, either with soap or with a hand sanitizer. A very good barrier practice, but also a reflex that can quickly make your hands dryer. Water (especially if it is calcareous, or very hot) can attack the hydrolipidic film, which has trouble playing its role as a protective barrier and preventing dehydration.

Likewise, the alcohol in hand sanitizers irritates the skin and makes the hands dryer if used frequently.

But what is the solution? Choose gentle care products: a superfatted soap, enriched with vegetable oil (olive oil, argan oil, sweet almond oil, etc.) or shea butter to wash and nourish the skin in one step, unlike traditional soaps that tend to dry out the skin. The latter contain soda, which gives them an alkaline pH, whereas the pH of the skin is acidic. As a result, they have a detergent effect that is irritating the hands. They also usually contain sulphates, which enable them to lather well but which, however, irritate the skin. Another reason to turn to hygiene products with natural formulas that are more respectful of the skin!

In terms of hand sanitizers, choose formulas rich in softening agents, such as Aloe vera, which will counteract their drying properties, and limit their use as much as possible.

…and dry them well

After washing, gently dry your hands with a soft towel to remove every drop of water. Gently wipe between the fingers, and avoid automatic hand dryers which increase dehydration.

Moisturise daily

To prevent cutaneous dryness and repair damaged hands, there is nothing like a hand cream that will restore the skin’s moisture and make it soft and supple. You need a multi-functional skin care product that protects, repairs, moisturises and nourishes all at once.

Our Lapland Hand Cream prevents skin dryness and treats hands damaged by chapping and cracking. Its ultra-soft, fluid and creamy texture envelops the hands like a protective balm, protecting them for 24 hours. This repairing cream penetrates quickly, with no greasy effect, to relieve dry hands. Its light fragrance will charm you for a pure cocooning moment.

Our advice? Leave it near the sink to use after each hand wash, and put it in your bag to use whenever you need it. Its moisturising and repairing action also works wonderfully on the nails: massage a small amount of product into the cuticles to nourish them and boost nail growth.

This treatment will quickly become a must-have and a perfect ally to protect and embellish your dry hands.

Choosing the right ingredients in a hand cream

There are many hand care products available on the market, but not all of them are equal! We advice you to choose natural formulas, which are gentler and more effective for the skin. At Polaar, we relied on exceptional polar active ingredients for our hand cream: Arctic Berries : Raspberries, Cranberries and Blackberries. These small berries thrive in the far north under difficult climatic conditions. To cope with this bad weather, they had developed extraordinary properties. The Arctic raspberry, known as the noblest berry in the Nordic countries, has nourishing properties, while cranberries and blackberries are full of vitamins and antioxidants that repair and protect the skin. The Arctic Berries are cold extracted by cryogenics (-28°C) to preserve their incredible properties and share them with you in our hand cream.

For greater efficiency, the formula of this exceptional care product is completed by two ingredients with a repairing action: Olive oil and Shea butter, two active ingredients that have always been recognised for their ability to moisturise gently.

With 96% natural ingredients, this Hand Cream contains no parabens, phenoxyethanol, alcohol or mineral oil for the most natural formula possible. It is also vegan, in line with our commitment to respect the environment and animals.

Good to know: the Lapland Cream range also includes a Face and Sensitive Areas Cream, a Lip Balm, and a Moisturizing Body Lotion so that dry skin can enjoy the benefits of Arctic Berries from head to toe! Exfoliate and massage your hands

Finally, consider giving your hands a little extra once in a while: a scrub once or twice a week with a gentle, grain-free exfoliant will remove dead skin cells for a more glowing and beautiful finish.

To stimulate the skin’s circulation and reduce stress, give your tired hands a little massage at a beauty salon or at home. Our Hand Cream is perfect for this: take a small amount of product, start by massaging the fingertips and back towards the inside of the palm to relax the muscles and soften the skin. All you have to do is enjoy this relaxing moment!

You now know all the tips for taking care of your hands at any time of year. Your motto? Protect – nourish – repair with basic steps and effective creams that will relieve damaged hands.
